Brawn & Brains Coffee is a charming little cafe which we had visited from time to time ever since it started in small corner towards the rear of the old Singapore Badminton Hall.
It moved to a larger space in the front of the same building but the seating was still rather limited. The cafe was popular. You can read about our visit to Brawn and Brains at Guillemard Road here. We were glad when Brawn & Brains Coffee opened a new branch in East Coast Road last year.
Brawn & Brains Coffee East Coast occupies a long shophose with a rear courtyard which allows natural light to bathe the back of the cafe. The courtyard can also serve as an al fresco dining space. The design theme from Brawn and Brains Guillemard is carried over to the East Coast outpost but somehow we find the the space in the East more appealing. Brawn & Brains East Coast has a relaxed comfortable atmosphere with tables well spread out in an attractive minimalist industrial space.
Menu of Brawn & Brains East Coast
Like their Guillemard outlet, the drinks menu is longer than the food menu at Brawn & Brains East Coast. Besides items on the menu, pastries and cakes are also available at the cafe.
Breakfast at Brawn & Brains
We visited Brawn & Brains East Coast for breakfast recently and ordered a Pastry Set ($8) comprising a croissant and a latte, a Classic Pancake ($12.90), a slice of Orange with Flaxseed Cake ($7.70) and a Cappuccino ($5.50).
The Classic Pancake was a simple dish elegantly presented. The freshly made pancakes were spongy and just slightly crispy on the outside. The house-made kaya was delightful and a nice change from the usual maple syrup, which was also provided. The sinful cube of butter really sealed the deal.
The Earl Grey Croissant was topped with glaze and nuts. It was nice with a buttery texture and a discernible aroma or Earl Grey tea. It was not as fluffy as the croissants of bakeries that specializes in the classic viennoiserie pastry.
The slice of Orange with Flaxseed Cake was quite thick. The cake was enjoyable though we thought it was a tad dry. The tangy flavour of oranges was dominant. The reported health benefits of flaxseed grains helped to soothe the conscience when eating such a big piece of cake for breakfast.
The best thing about breakfast at Brawn & Brains East is the excellent coffee, whether it is the Single Origin Cappuccino or House Blend Latte.
Nice Breakfast Spot
Breakfast at Brawn & Brains Coffee East Coast is a pleasant and relaxed affair. You can feel right at home there whether you are in your business suit and heels or in your T-shirt and flip flops. It opens early and serves more than decent food and great coffee in a charming space. Brawn & Brains is a very nice breakfast spot in the East.
