We came across the FC & Dining Table Steak Flower shop and restaurant in Kyoto by accident. We were looking for a restaurant near the Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto Goshoto) to have a quick lunch before going to the palace itself.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace
The area around the Kyoto Imperial Palace where we wandered about is a mainly residential. We did come across some restaurants but they did not look very interesting. Here are some pictures that we took of the Palace which unfortunately was closed for renovations. Only the external areas and the gardens were accessible.
FC Table Steak Restaurant
We were attracted by the quaint exterior of the FC & Dining Table Steak Flower. Not knowing what to expect, we peered into the entrance. There was a small area at the entrance that seemed to be dealing with flowers, but the main area and activity of the place was being a steakhouse. This is the kind of unexpected place that we like to try.
The FC & Dining Table Steak Flower shop and restaurant has most of its seats around the counter. There are two small tables at the front. The restaurant is manned by the chef /owner behind the counter and a lady at the front. The chef is an audiophile and plays his music through some esoteric looking hifi equipment. From our brief converstion, it seems that some of the tube amps were hand built by him. English retro music, mostly the Beatles, was on the playlist that day.
FC & Dining Table Steak Flower Menu
The menu at FC Dining Table is a simple one- just two cuts of steak and some supporting actors – soup, rice and salad.
Asahi Superdry costs 500 yen each, not much more than oolong tea, so the choice was obvious.
The Green Salad (500 yen for a large portion) was a fresh, healthy start to our meal. The spinach leaves were crunchy and taste good with the soy sauce dressing. The beef consomme (180 yen per cup, picture below) was small, but made up for its size by being rich and concentrated.
The main event of course was the steak. Diners can specify the size of steak, starting with a minimum of 1500 yen for a 255g steak. I think our steak was 340g and cost 2000 yen. It was not a gourmet steak but was a good juicy steak. For the price, it was certainly good value for money.
The wall next to the table was plastered with comments and doodles from diners who had come before us. We could tell that they are happy and satisfied customers even though we cannot read most of them. FC & Dining Table Steak Flower is certainly a friendly restaurant near the Kyoto Imperial Palace which we would like to visit again.
