Pebbles Kitchen is a new cafe in The Odeon Katong. It is a cosy space for coffee and typical cafe fare as well as interesting heritage delights such as beef stew, lontong and mee siam.
Pebbles Kitchen in Odeon Katong
The Odeon Katong sits unassumingly on East Coast Road. People who flock to Katong for food seldom step into The Odeon Katong. However, a peek inside reveals a delightful collection of eateries, including the inviting Italian restaurant Volare, the trendy Beastly Girls Sandwich Bar and the tempting Wan Mei dessert shop.
Previously a haven for health-conscious foodies, The Whole Kitchen Bakery Cafe has given up its bakery cafe in Odeon Katong (leaving its Robinson Road outlet as the sole survivor). Stepping into the vacated space, complete with its familiar furnishings, is Pebbles Kitchen.
The new Pebbles Kitchen is located on the ground floor of Odeon Katong. Although it has a East Coast Road address, the main entrance to the cafe is actually along Ean Kiam Place. Inside, a comfortable dining area awaits, while for those seeking a breath of fresh air, al fresco tables line the corridors.
Pebbles Kitchen Menu
The menu of Pebbles Kitchen is not extensive. Besides the typical cafe fare, they have a Heritage Delights section listing their signature dishes such as mee siam, turmeric ginger chicken and beef stew. The prices are reasonable.
There are cakes, pastries, curry puffs and pies on display at the counter.
Below are pictures of pages of their digital menu.
Lunch at Pebbles Kitchen
I went for lunch at Pebbles Kitchen in Odeon Katong and ordered the Signature Grilled Turmeric Ginger Chicken ($13.80), Black Coffee ($5) and Coconut Cake ($5.80). No GST or service charge would be added to the bill.
The Grilled Turmeric Ginger Chicken arrived as a plate with mixed colours and textures. Steamed rice formed the base and was topped with a sunny-side up egg. Keropok added a touch of crispness, and achar, a tangy-sweet pickled vegetable relish, provided a vibrant counterpoint to the chicken.
The chicken thigh was well marinated. House-made spices, featuring turmeric, ginger and other ingredients, permeated the tender meat, creating a dish that was both aromatic and richly flavoured. The gravy, while not spicy, was interesting, adding another layer of complexity. The entire dish was a delightful and thoroughly satisfying experience.
The coffee was good, while the coconut cake did not leave a lasting impression.
Cosy ambience, reasonable prices
The staff (probably owners) at Pebbles Kitchen were warm, hospitable and genuinely pleasant. While I did not get to try their signature mee siam, I overheard a fellow diner praising it – even her Peranakan cook mother approved. The food I sampled was good, complemented by a satisfying cup of coffee. The cosy ambience, coupled with reasonable prices, makes Pebbles Kitchen a welcome addition to Katong’s already vibrant food scene.
