Within The Walls Dessert Bar and the East Coast Road Food Street

Within The Walls Dessert Bar is a place which made us stop, look and try, as we passed by East Coast Road near the famous Beach Road Prawn Noodle House. With a combination of retro Hong Kong industrial design and laid-back roadside Korean dining, this is quite a unique restaurant in Singapore.

Dessert Shop Inspired By Kowloon Walled City (九龍寨城)

According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, it is a “dessert bar that blends local traditional desserts with an all-day dim sum menu, in a setting inspired by the iconic Kowloon Walled City. We transform into a vibrant bar, featuring retro music with a lively social experience.” Live music is apparently performed on some evenings.

Within The Walls Dessert Bar review

Wikipedia describes the Kowloon Walled City (九龍寨城) as “an extremely densely populated and largely lawless enclave of China within the boundaries of Kowloon City of former British Hong Kong….By the late 1980s, the walled city contained roughly 35,000 residents within its territory of 2.6 hectares (6.4 acres; 26,000 m2), or approximately four football fields“.

Within The Walls Dessert and Dim Sum Menu

Here are pictures of the dessert and dim sum menus. We were there quite late in the evening and only the dessert menu was available. We ordered sesame paste ($4.90 each) with peanut and sesame balls (tang yuan) as extra add-ons ($2 for 2 pieces).

These are pictures of our late night dessert. They thoughtfully separated the peanut and sesame balls so we could sort it out among ourselves. The taste was pretty good and we would certainly return again. But I think the main motivation to return will probably be to experience the atmosphere and vibes of Within The Walls Dessert Bar again.

East Coast Food Street

In addition to the new dessert bar, the row of shops near the junction of East Coast Road and Telok Kurau Road have collaborated to make dining a seamless experience. According to a Straits Times article in April 2025, takeaway food from any one of them can be consumed at their neighbours’ premises. The collaboration was said to be initiated by Mr Mok of Within The Walls Dessert Bar in 2024.

The eight participating shops are Jag Wine, DJDH Ramen Restaurant (Da Jia Dou Hao),Century Wines, Breakfast Grill, Within The Walls Dessert Bar, Yam’s Treasure, Feng Sheng Kampong Chicken Rice & Steamboat (24hrs) and Beach Road Prawn Noodle House. The stretch looks attractive in the evening. Here are pictures that we took of some of these f & b outlets on this visit.

Beach Road Prawn Noodle House

The famous prawn noodle house was closed at the time of our visit. Here is a picture from a previous visit.

Feng Sheng Kampong Chicken Rice

Here is a picture of one page from the Feng Sheng Kampong Chicken Rice menu. This view of the East Coast Road “food street” has a warm roadside dining vibe that we think is rare in Singapore.
