Kok Sen Keong Saik Restaurant : Bib Gourmand Tze Char

Famous tze char restaurant Kok Sen Keong Saik moved to their current location in 2022. For many decades, they had been at the old location which was also along Keong Saik Road, several shops up the same road. Better late than never, it was time to visit them at the new location.

Kok Sen Keong Saik Restaurant review

We had mixed feelings about the new Kok Sen Keong Saik restaurant. The old one was also air-conditioned but had the decor and character of a coffee shop which is more in tune with the tze char cuisine served. You can see photos of it in an earlier post. The current one looks contemporary and could be a cafe or modern Taiwan restaurant like Moon Moon Food. On balance I think it is an improvement. It is clean and bright. It also has a better layout and more capacity.

The Kok Sen Keong Saik menu is quite extensive. Here are some pages of the menu with some of our favourite items.

Described in the Singapore Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand restaurant with good quality and good value cooking, Kok Sen has been a Bib Gourmand restaurant for as long as we can remember. The menu has enough variety to cater to all budgets from simple fried noodles to expensive seafood dishes.

Lunch at Bib Gourmand Restaurant Singapore

We went earlier for our lunch at Kok Seng Keong Saik and were able to get a table without reservation. We ordered a few tze char classic dishes – prawn roll, claypot yong tau foo and big prawns hor fun.

The prawn balls (picture above) were perfectly fried with minimum oiliness. They were very tasty and would make a great dish to go with drinks at happy hour. The yong tau foo pieces were plump and juicy. Combined with the rich gravy, these may have been better to be eaten with rice.

We think we saw the big prawn hor fun dish on almost all the tables surrounding us. Buried under a thick gravy which seemed like that used to cook chilli crabs were lots of prawns and hor fun. It was more spicy than we would normally like. Other than that it was a great dish. It is a large dish that can be shared by two or three diners.
