Supergreen Star Vista: DIY Salad Bowl $10.30

Supergreen Star Vista is the largest outlet of this salad chain that seems to be blooming across the Singapore island. With nutrition being the subject of a few headlines recently (Malnutrition rates rising among older Singaporeans; Budget meals may fill stomachs, but not nutrition needs), we thought that it is time we explored some healthy food options.

Healthy Takeaway for Office Workers

Apart from Supergreen Star Vista, there are 12 other outlets in Singapore – in places such as Changi City Point, Paya Lebar Square, Tangs Orchard and some in the CBD. It is not coincidence that most of the outlets are situated in office areas. Salads bowls are the most practical choice to either go for a quick meal or as a takeaway. The food containers are clean and mostly odourless. Co-workers and office pantry aunties will not have any objection to these kinds of food.

Another good reason for a salad at lunch time is the speed of purchase. The precious lunch hour can be more productively used for other things if lunch itself can be quickened. At Supergreen Star Vista, we noticed that the lunch crowd started at around 1130 and was in full swing at 1215. Even then, the queue moved quick and smooth like clockwork.

Supergreen Star Vista Menu

According to its website,  “Supergreen is dedicated to delivering quality salads made from carefully selected, nutrient-rich ingredients … to offer you a delicious and convenient way to enjoy a balanced diet.” There are two main ways to order food. Choose from one of the Signature bowls (priced from $10.30 to $13.30) or Build Your Own Bowl (priced from $10.30). Here are pictures of the menu.

Drinks are also available as an add on to a salad – a peach tea or coffee for $2.

Build Our Own Bowl

For our first trial of a Supergreen, we decided to make our own selections. We also kept to the $10.30 standard package of 2 bowl bases, 4 toppings, one standard protein and one dressing. Here is a picture of the bowl base (brown rice, pasta, soba noodle or lettuce) and the toppings.

The toppings section looked the most interesting and had items such as baby corn, chickpea, edamame, hard-boiled egg, sweet potato, pumpkin, broccoli and tofu cubes etc.

This is a picture of the protein section, sous vide chicken breast, teriyaki chicken, smoked duck, mala prawn (+$1.5), yakiniku beef (+$1.5) and baked salmon (+$3).

The salad bowl was placed on a scale at the last station as the protein portion was weighed (80g in the case of the chicken).

Supergreen Star Vista Salad Bowls – Our Favourite Combination

Here are pictures of our salad bowls for our healthy lunch at Star Vista. This being our first try we both selected the sous vide chicken as it seemed to be the safest and healthiest bet. We also tried different bowl bases and toppings. Overall, it is safe to say that we were very satisfied with our healthy meal. The quality of the ingredients were good and the quantity was adequate. In fact, we think that the bowl which had two carbs (soba and rice) was excessive for the base. In fact we could share one bowl for a future visit and simply add on another protein. Rice and lettuce as a base was more balanced.

As for the toppings, we thought that the best items we tried on this visit were the broccoli, sweet potato, pumpkin and tofu cubes. These items were cooked perfectly – soft but not mushy. These would be our default choices for the 4 toppings for now. Dining in at the restaurant was a bit squeezy as the tables are small and close together. Otherwise this healthy lunch was a happy meal.
