Kimukatsu Takashimaya is a mini restaurant on level B2 of Takashimaya Shopping Center at Orchard Road. Their version of tonkatsu is said to be a “tender and flavorful 25 layers of porkloin handcrafted into mille-feuille cutlet, wrapped in crispy golden panko crust.” We had tried this as a takeaway dish during the COVID days and we liked the taste. The restaurant counter looked exactly like what it was four years ago. However, this time was a dine-in experience for us.

Kimukatsu Takashimaya
Like Yonehachi Takashimaya which we wrote about earlier, Kimukatsu Takashimaya is situated in a corner of B2 where a group of eateries are organised like a food court but operate separately like mini restaurants. Orders are placed, payment made and diners are assigned to specified tables that are earmarked for the respective restaurants.

There are various set meals available with specified proteins for mains, served with rice, miso soup, fresh cabbage and pickles. For our lunch at Takashimaya that day we chose the Original Kimukatsu Special Set ($14.90) and a Chicken Katsu Don ($18.80).

Kimukatsu Takashimaya Original Set
The original set looked like a typical tonkatsu serving. Sliced pieces of pork placed on a wire ‘drip tray’ accompanied by pickles, miso soup, cabbage and a wooden tub of rice. It was quite quaint to eat fluffy white rice out of a wooden tub.

Unlike our previous experience the mille-feuille layering was not so obvious. More importantly, the taste was not as good as we remember it to be a few years ago. We thought that the meat had some mild “porky” flavour on this visit.

Chicken Katsu Don
Our other dish was presented more simply with only a miso soup as accompaniment. However it was the more enjoyable dish. Mostly because the chicken did not have any unwanted favours. It was a simple egg and chicken dish on a bowl of rice.
