Tsui Wah Jem is one of the Singapore outlets of Hong Kong’s Tsui Wah ็ฟ ่ฏย restaurant group. It made history as the first cha chaan tengย (Hong Kong-style diner) to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange main board.

ย Tsui Wah in Singapore
The first Tsui Wah restaurant in Singapore opened at Clarke Quay in 2018. We remember it was met with a huge positive response. There were long queues to try their famous cha chan teng favourites such as Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk and Tsui Wah Signature Pork Chop Bun. On our visit, we were impressed by the service attitude of the restaurant staff. Some chairs were put outside for waiting customers and water dispensers were prepared to keep those in the queue hydrated. The photo below is from our post on our visit in 2018.

Currently there are five Tsui Wah restaurants in Singapore. The original Clarke Quay outlet is no longer there but a “replacement” opened nearby at #01-08 Clarke Quay Central. The remaining outlets are in The Cathay, COURTS NOJIMA The Heeren, Jewel Changi Airport and Jem.
Tsui Wah Jurong East Outlet
Tsui Wah has three outlets in central Singapore and one each in the east (Changi Airport) and west (Jurong East). The Tsui Wah Jem outlet opened in 2021 and is conveniently located on level one. It has a clean and bright appearance which gave us a good first impression.

Tsui Wah Jem Menu
Here are pictures of some pages of the restaurant menu at Jem. On this visit to Tsui Wah, we tried the rice with BBQ pork and wanton noodles.

Steamed Rice with BBQ Pork and Scrambled Egg
Basically the Tsui Wah BBQ pork rice ($14.80 + $1 for fried rice option) was a substantially upsized version of the common char siew rice. It turned out to be larger than expected. The slices of char siew in particular were thick-cut and nicely roasted. There was a balance of fat with lean meat. We would have preferred the meat to be less sweetly marinated, but overall it was pretty good. The scrambled egg and our opting for fried rice added more flavours. This would be adequate for even those with a reasonably big appetite.

Lunch at Tsui Wah Jem: Wanton Noodles
Hongkong wanton noodles is something we never get tired of. And so it was easy to come to a decision on the wanton with tossed noodles ($11.80).

The dry noodles were served separate from the wantons which were in the soup (picture above). We fished them out so that you can see them (picture below). We thought that both the dumplings and noodles were very good. The prawns in the wanton were crunchy and fresh while the noodles had the familiar HK noodles “Q” texture. Very good indeed.

Tsui Wah’s Signature BBQ Pork
We had underestimated the portion size of our food and had also ordered an extra serving of the signature bbq pork. With hindsight it was not necessary as the char siew quantity with the rice was quite adequate. But anyway, there can never be too much char siew. The extra effort to walk off the extra calories should be worth it.

Finally, a visit to a cha chan teng would not be compete without a HK style milk tea.
