Greek Food In Singapore : Bakalaki Revisited

A popular place for Greek food in Singapore, Bakalaki Greek Taverna is a large Greek restaurant in the River Valley Road / Mohamed Sultan area. Here are some of the food that we tried during a repeat visit.

Greek Food In Singapore : Bakalaki

We had visited the Bakalaki Greek restaurant before for a quick lunch. You can see the dishes we tried that day as well as more pictures of the restaurant interior on our post. We had been curious about the other food on the menu and returned recently to try more types of Greek food in Singapore. This time we were seated in a different area of the restaurant. The area near the entrance has a different character – bright and modern whereas the internal area (where we sat at the earlier visit) was cosy and more traditional.

Greek Food Menu at Bakalaki

We are not very familiar with Greek cuisine but the menu certainly contains a wide variety of Greek food. Here are some pages of the menu.

Snacks and Starters

For starters we had a smoky eggplant and red peppers spread ($15.90) paired with pita bread ($2.90). That was a delicious combination. There are other types of spreads on the menu such as chickpea hummus and spicy feta cheese spread. We are curious to try these on a future visit.

Another good combination is beef meatballs ($18.90) and beer. It would have been more appropriate to pair Greek food in Singapore with some Greek beer, but we have softness for German beer, in particular Erdinger Weiss ($14.90). Actually, this combination also gave out some Oktoberfest vibes.

Greek ‘Claypot’ Dishes

Two of the dishes were served in claypots. These types of Greek food in Singapore reminded us of local the char dishes. The oven baked vegetables ($19.90) had peppers cooked till soft, with dill and the fragrant olive oil providing great flavours. We would have liked it better if there were less potatoes which were buried under the top layer of of vegetables.

The other claypot dish was slow cooked oyster blade beef with tomato sauce and orzo pasta ($32.90). This could possibly be the equivalent of our local claypot beef brisket (‘ngau lam poh‘). A good hearty dish.

Traditional Greek Food in Singapore : Octopus and Chicken

The grilled octopus dish ($36.90) arrived in three tentacles. In total the portion size was quite small but the thick parts of the tentacles were very good.

Our final dish was also the most substantial – kalamaki merida. This grilled meat dish came with different options for the type of meat. We chose chicken tiros ($26.90). This messy looking plate contained a pile of grilled chicken on a base of pita bread and baked potato, onions and tomato on the side. Eaten with just a squeeze of lemon or with the yogurt dip, it ensured that we did not go home hungry.
