Anjin Lounge sits on top of the Tsutaya Books store at the Daikanyama T-Site, Tokyo. It is a library & café where visitors can browse a large range of books while relaxing with a drink or over a meal. In the daytime, Daikanyama T-Site gets quite crowded, being a popular place for locals and tourists. In the evening, the mood quietens and mellows down, making this a nice venue for a quiet dinner during our recent trip to Tokyo.
Daikanyama T-Site
In recent times, Daikanyama has become a very hip and instagram-worthy place in Tokyo. The GO Tokyo website refers to this area near Shibuya as “Tokyo’s stylish catwalk”. Stylish architecture, fashionable shops and trendy cafes populate this locale. At the heart of this place is the Daikanyama T-Site, a cluster of buildings with Tsutaya Books as the main attraction, together with other stores such as Starbucks, Ivy Place restaurant and Anjin Lounge.
Tsutaya Books on the ground floor at Daikanyama T-Site is a user-friendly bookshop. Books are unwrapped and available for browsing. A generous amount of seating is also available, making this a welcoming place.
Anjin Lounge, Library and Cafe
Located on the second level of one of the buildings is Anjin Lounge, a large cafe surrounded by lots of books that diners are able to take and read at their tables.
A large grand piano stands in the lounge seating area. We were hoping for a musical performance in the evening, but that was not the case.
Daikanyama T-Site Dinner
Our first impressions at Anjin were positive. Although the cafe was quite large and the number of staff seemed few, we were able to get seated and our orders taken efficiently. The menu was quite extensive. We picked a Beef Stew (2750 yen) and a chestnut Mont Blanc cake (1980 yen). As in many places we visited in Tokyo, the prices are nett and include taxes and charges.
The portion size of the beef stew was generous. Served with a large plate of rice, it was enough to be shared by two of us. The beef had been cooked till very soft and the gravy was rich. We thought that we made a good choice.
Our simple dinner ended with the dessert of Mont Blanc cake. The pastry that is made with a mound of chestnut paste wound up like a ball of string. The chestnut flavour was deep and the texture was just right. It was even more satisfying than the stew. However, in this case, one item was hardly adequate for sharing. We should have ordered two.
