The opening of Peach Garden’s latest outlet at the Metropolis is a welcome addition to the dining options available to patrons working in or residing in the Buona Vista area. Although many restaurants have set up shop in the area, particularly in Star Vista, it is surprising that most of them opted for non-traditional cuisines e.g. Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnam even German. For main stream Chinese food, the new additions had been few.
Peach Garden @ The Metropolis is a medium sized restaurant with seating for approximately 90 pax. It is decorated in a bright contemporary style. With the large population of office workers in the building as its captive patrons, the restaurant is very busy at lunch time but gets quite quiet in the evenings and weekends, It serves the usual range of Chinese dishes and also some set menus. For the single diner or for takeaway, there is a good selection of individual lunches available at around an average price of $15. We tried their set menu A for two persons ($68).
The meal started strongly with the fried carrot cake with XO sauce together with a fried bacon roll with mint leaves. The XO carrot cake was not bad while the bacon roll was an unusual dish which tasted very good. The other dish that we liked was the sauteed Kurobuta pork with foie gras sauce and black pepper. The pork had good taste and texture and was enhanced by the unique sauce.
Other than that, the remaining dishes i.e. the soup of the day (chicken soup), the stir-fried HK kai lan, the fried rice and dessert were quite unremarkable.
Overall, the meal was a hit-and-miss experience. The very average items were a disappointment considering the high standards that Peach Garden is known for.
