Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok

When there are more than a few stalls in Singapore using “Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok” as part of their names, you can guess there there must have been a popular mee pok hawker in Jalan Tua Kong at some time. We had in fact eaten the mee pok at Jalan Tua Kong many years back. We had to wait for a long time for a bowl of noodles then but it seemed that the wait was always worthwhile. We were thus glad to stumble upon Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok in Joo Chiat Place. We changed our dinner plans and had noodles there.

Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok operates out of a coffeeshop in Joo Chiat Place, just next to Kim Choo Nyonya Dumplings shop. The seating area is mostly outdoors, although there are retractable awnings to give protection from the elements.

Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok’s signature dish is mee pok tar, a humble one-dish-meal featuring flat yellow noodles tossed in gravy and topped with items like minced meat and fish cakes. However, they also sell kway teow soup and have a range of zi char dishes .

The basic noodles start at $4 per bowl. We ordered two bowls of the dried version of their noodles – a bowl of mee kia tar and a bowl of mee pok tar.

The wait for the food was only about 10 minutes. Each bowl of noodles was served with a bowl of soup. The amount of noodles for the $4 bowl was little although the toppings were fairly generous.

The noodles were light and springy and did not clump together. They were cooked just right so that they were not too soft. The texture of the mee pok was more interesting relative to the mee kia. The mixed sauce was well balanced and quite tasty. However, it was the chilli that really added zest to the dish. The light clear soup was also quite flavourful.

Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok in Joo Chiat Place is a nice little spot where you can enjoy a decent bowl of minced pork noodles without an extraordinary long wait. They also serve other dishes so that you can add variety to your meal. We enjoyed our mee kia and mee pok  at Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok though we thought the noodles we had back then in Jalan Tua Kong tasted better – perhaps that was just sentimentality for the past.
