Phoenix Garden is a Cantonese restaurant offering comfort food and photogenic dim sum at affordable prices. The restaurant in Parkway Parade is a good place for diners looking for value, variety and pleasant surroundings.

Phoenix Garden Restaurant in Parkway Parade

The restaurant opens its doors at Parkway Parade recently, taking over the premises formerly occupied by Putien on level two. Phoenix Garden has a spacious interior with contemporary design elements that feel both modern and welcoming. Light wood and cream tones dominate the interior. A prominent white disc-shaped light create visual interest above. Large windows at the rear allow natural light to stream into the dining area.

Phoenix Garden’s layout accommodates different dining preferences. Tables are well-spaced throughout the restaurant. The setup works equally well for those who prefer a quiet meal or larger gatherings.

Menu of Phoenix Garden
The menu of Phoenix Garden includes all the typical Cantonese restaurant categories: meats, poultry, seafood, soups, vegetables, rice, noodles, and desserts. The dim sum section is rather extensive and includes several interesting and exclusive items.

Selection of Dim Sum
During our visit, we tried several dim sum dishes that showcased both the creativity and traditional techniques of Phoenix Garden’s chefs.

The Signature Goldfish Prawn Dumpling ($3.80) was visually striking. Each dumpling looked like a small goldfish, complete with a curled tail. Presentation aside, the taste delivered. The skin was soft and delicate, while the prawn filling was fresh and had a slight bounce. It was not overly seasoned, so the natural sweetness could be discerned.

The Vegetarian Butterfly Blue Pea Dumpling ($3.80) demonstrated similar attention to presentation. The natural blue colouring created an Instagram-worthy appearance. The dumpling skin had good texture – neither too thick nor prone to tearing.

We also tried the Steamed Minced Pork Fresh Beancurd Roll ($3.80). The beancurd skin was smooth and light, wrapping a filling of minced pork that was well-balanced in flavour.

One dish that did quite hit the mark was the Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice with Chicken ($3.80). While the chicken was tender and the salted egg yolk added a nice salty richness, the glutinous rice itself lacked depth. It was soft and properly steamed but tasted rather bland. A small dollop of chilli sauce was needed to save the dish.
Creative Dessert

For dessert, we were excited to try the unusual Rice Dumpling with Espresso Coffee ($3.80). True to its name, the dish consisted of three small rice dumplings filled with sesame paste, served in a bowl of strong black coffee. The rice dumplings themselves were soft and chewy, but the pairing with bitter espresso did not work for us. It was an ambitious fusion attempt that would not be a threat to the traditional tang yuan or ah baling.

Good Value Proposition
What stood out during our visit was the pricing. Phoenix Garden offers something that is becoming increasingly rare in Singapore’s dining scene – quality dim sum for under $5 a basket. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and there was no pressure to upgrade or order extras. Overall, Phoenix Garden offers a wide range of palatable dim sum in a bright, welcoming setting. It is a good choice for patrons who want value, variety and a comfortable dining experience.
